The NYC HIV/AIDS picture does not look promising for Latinos

Latina women of childbearing age constitute a major segment of an invisible but continuously growing population of HIV-infected women of color, representing a heterogenous group whose disenfranchised status binds them to a common and tragic outcome. Eighty-one percent of AIDS cases reported among females in the U.S. during the year ending June 30, 2008 were among women of color. Women of color are sicker at the time of diagnosis, and die nearly 15 times more quickly than do white males with HIV/AIDS . As the leading cause of death among Latinas between ages 25 and 34, AIDS is projected to become the leading cause of death among minority women of childbearing age in the 21st century .

The high proportion of AIDS prevalence among Latinos and African Americans in New York City has been increasing since 2007 when Latinos and African Americans made up 80.1% of the cumulative AIDS cases and increasing to 86% in 2008. This is due to shifting epidemiological trend of lower AIDS prevalence among white MSM and increasing HIV infection among African American and Latino women, and injecting drug users. Latinos account for 25% of NYC's population, but they represent 51% of adults with AIDS.

AIDS among Hispanics in NYC

One out of every five Hispanics got HIV. Hispanic/Latina women are about 50 times more likely to get HIV than white women. Most of these women got HIV from having sex with a man. Cultural factors may play a part in the high rates of HIV among Hispanics/Latinas.

Meanwhile, Cameron Diaz embraces her Latina-ness… By contrast, Ms. Diaz, a third generation Cuban, recently said the following in an interview, and we heart her for it. “My Latin roots are very strong. All my life, because I’m blonde and blue-eyed, people who aren’t Hispanic can’t believe I am. And people who are Hispanic always think I’m not, because I don’t look like them. Being Latin is part of who I am and I bring that part to every role.”

We will call him Mr Gringo to keep his identity anonymous ...this is a real confession from am white american who do little hispanic kids all over usa and south and central america necesserly mexico , DR and Ecuador. 

To Mr Gringo, latin america is a wonderful place because it makes him feel young. 'I'm an old guy, I'm 65', he said, 'but young girls still make up to me. That keeps you young'. He then explained that these girls are not really prostitutes. 'They have to do it for the money, because most of them have been left in the lurch with kiddies' but they are very different from North American and European prostitutes, because they actually enjoy the sex:

It sounds as though Mr. Gringo is simply rehearsing the usual self-serving sex tourist script which revolves around the idea that the woman is not really a prostitute and so he himself is not really a client. However, for Mr. Gringo, this is part of a narrative which permits him to sexually exploit children as well as older teenagers and adult women. He continues:

"Sex is a natural thing for Hispanics. Everyone's at it, fathers do it with their daughters, brothers do it with their sisters,mother with son; they don't care. They'll do it with anyone, they do it with everyone, they don't care who it is or how old they are. They're like animals. That's the only way I can explain it to you. hey're like dogs or cats or roosters. Have you seen roosters, the way in the farmyard the way they carry on? Just hop on top of any chicken they see. That's what it's like Hispanics. By the time a girl is 10 years old, she's had more experience than, well, an American woman or an Irish woman won't never have that much experience in her whole life... Girls learn it's the way to make money. It's natural to them, it's a natural way to live , to survive its like going to school for other kids."

HIV resurges in men who have sex with men

A new analysis of HIV diagnoses among men who have sex with men points to a troubling increase in new cases among young men, U.S. health officials reported. 

Public health experts use the term “men who have sex with men,” or MSM, because many of these men are not strictly homosexual or even bisexual. 

Between 2001 and 2008 male to male sex was the largest HIV transmission category in the U.S., and the only one associated with an increasing number of HIV/AIDS diagnoses, according to a report from Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

The jump was highest- an increase of 19.4 percent- among boys and men between the ages 13 an 24 years who had sex with other males, particularly among ethnic minorities. 

“To reduce transmission of HIV among MSM of all races/ethnicities, prevention strategies should be strengthened, improved, and implemented more broadly, “CDC health officials wrote in their Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. 

Testing is important, they add, because “after persons become aware that they are HIV positive, most reduce their high risk sexua behavior.” 

The report describes trends in diagnoses of HIV/AIDS in 33 states that have confidential, name-based HIV case reporting.

Of 514,379 diagnoses during the study period, 46 percent were among MSM. The rate of new diagnoses declined in all other transmission categories- injection drug use, high risk heterosexual contact, and other routes of transmission. 

Among all MSM, the estimated annual increase in the number of diagnoses among MSM was highest among Asian/Pacific Islanders at 12.1 percent, following by a 3.6 percent rate among American Indian/Alaska Natives; however; these two groups accounted for fewer than 1 percent of all diagnoses made during the study period.  The annual increase was 1.9 percent among Caucasians. 

In MSM younger than age 25, African Americans bore the greatest burden with 27,658 new diagnoses (annual rate of change of 25 percent), followed by  12422 new cases among Hispanics (28 percent).and  5221 new cases among Caucasians (19 percent annula increase) .

10-year-old St. Anthony Girl Gives Birth

It's an unbelievable story that has an entire community shocked. According to a credible source, a 10-year-old St. Anthony girl has given birth to a baby. Court documents confirm that a St. Anthony man is in jail for raping the 10-year-old girl.

According to Idaho's Bureau of Vital Statistics, this is the first 10-year-old to give birth in Idaho for at least 20 years. 

Guadelupe Gutierrez-Juarez has been charged with raping the young girl. Gutierrez-Juarez has been in the Fremont County Jail since April 29.

St. Anthony Police said they were notified of the young girl's pregnancy by medical personnel after she went in for treatment at a doctor's office.

Neighbors who live near Gutierrez-Juarez are in shock as news of the young girl's pregnancy spreads.

"To think this happens next to you, on your block is just incredible," said one neighbor.

"That girl is just a baby, she shouldn't be having a baby," said another neighbor, Becky Clements.

According to a credible source, the young girl gave birth to a 6-pound baby through a C-Section at Madison Memorial Hospital. 

"I have grand children that's that age. It's horrifying," exclaimed Clements.

Neighbors say they believe Gutierrez-Juarez lives in his west St. Anthony house with several children. There is a swing set and multiple bikes in the front yard.

Police have not released the relationship between Gutierrez Juarez and his victim.

Gutierrez Juarez is being held on a $250,000 bond. If convicted, he faces life in prison.

Police are tight lipped about the case. They would not confirm the 10-year-old gave birth because they say they want to protect her identity.

Gutierrez-Juarez will be in court May 13 for a preliminary hearing.

Children and young people are not respected and honoured in an appropriate way. 120 informative meetings and workshops will be conducted in order to prevent and combat violence against children. The information is aimed at helping to prevent the abuse of children. Adults will increasingly become aware of the children's rights and begin to advocate for the children. 
Trained volunteers inform families and advise those families which are already affected by violence or are at risk. As the volunteers are able to identify cases of child abuse at an early stage, adequate measures can be implemented in time. Another important aspect of the work is the public dialogue about children's rights with all levels of society - families, local leaders and, most importantly, with the children themselves participating.

With promises of love, marriage and a better life in the United States, the women were made to work as prostitutes and forced to turn over virtually all of their cash - earned from sex acts priced as low as $25 - to the ring, said prosecutors Monica Ryan and Grace Chung Becker in a pretrial memorandum. They said Valencia and her family reaped hundreds of thousands of dollars from the brothels, with some of the proceeds wired from New York.

“She has maintained from the beginning that she is innocent of the charges,” said Valencia’s lawyer, John Wallenstein of Garden City.

He said Valencia insists that the allegations stem from a vendetta she had with the mother of one of the prostitutes in Mexico.

AIDS rates in the nation's Latino community are increasing and, with little

notice, have reached what experts are calling a simmering public health crisis.

Though Hispanics make up about 14 percent of the U.S. population, they represented 22 percent of new HIV and AIDS diagnoses tallied by federal officials.

in 2006. According to a survey by the Kaiser Family Foundation, Hispanics in the District have the highest rate of new AIDS cases in the country.

So far, the toll of AIDS in the nation's largest and fastest-growing minority population has mostly been overshadowed by the epidemic among African Americans and gay white men. 

Yet in major U.S. cities, as many as 1 in 4 gay Hispanic men has HIV, a rate on par with sub-Saharan Africa.

Blacks still have the highest HIV rates in the country, but language difficulties, cultural barriers and, in many cases, issues of legal status make the threat in the Hispanic community unique. For those who arrived illegally, in particular, fear of arrest and deportation presents a daunting obstacle to seeking diagnosis and treatment.

"Officials need to stop downplaying or ignoring what's happening among Latinos," said Oscar De La O, president of Bienestar, a Latino service organization. "We are at the center of the storm."

Even with the United States embroiled in a fierce debate over immigration policy, the problem of AIDS in Latinos had received scant attention from political and public health officials. At the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, where only two of 17 approved HIV programs target Hispanic

Americans, officials have added Spanish-language hotlines, confidential testing sites and other initiatives aimed at filling the gap.

"Hispanics are overrepresented in this epidemic, and we need to target our efforts to them," CDC epidemiologist Kenneth Dominguez said in an interview.

Officials do not have a precise tally of HIV infection nationwide, because many states have not reported figures to the CDC. The 22 percent, a figure that has not been previously released, includes 33 states and Puerto Rico, but not California, where more than 37 percent of the population is Hispanic.

"You combine the economic pressures, loneliness and immigration worries, and it pushes these individuals to be a hidden population," said Frank Galvan of the Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science in Los Angeles.

The consequences, however, go well beyond the Hispanic community. If the United States does not begin to "make a dent" in the swelling crisis of HIV among Hispanics, Galvan said, "it will continue to spread to other populations."
